Just a few years ago, the idea of buying a brand-new electric pickup for under $25,000 seemed almost impossible. While major automakers focused on EV trucks priced between $50,000 and $80,000, American startup Slate Auto decided to take a completely different approach.
Instead of adding expensive technology and luxury features, the company focused on one simple goal – building an affordable, practical, and easy-to-own electric pickup.

An Affordable Electric Pickup Is Finally Here
When Slate first introduced its concept in 2025, the company promised to revolutionize the EV market with a pickup priced at around $20,000 after federal tax incentives.
However, the market changed dramatically over the following year. The U.S. federal EV tax credit expired, production costs increased, and Slate engineers decided to significantly improve the vehicle before launch.
As a result, the base Slate Truck now starts at $24,950, while the Squareback SUV version starts at $29,950. Buyers looking for the more stylish Fastback SUV will pay $31,950.

What’s New?
The price increase wasn’t simply about inflation.
Slate replaced the original battery with a larger 63-65 kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery pack, increasing the estimated driving range to 205 miles (330 km).
The company also decided to simplify production by offering just one battery option instead of multiple configurations.
According to Slate, this decision came directly from customer feedback.
Another major benefit of the LFP battery is that it can be charged to 100% on a regular basis without causing the same level of long-term degradation associated with many traditional lithium-ion batteries.
Simplicity Is the Main Selling Point
Perhaps the most interesting thing about the Slate Truck isn’t its price.

While the average modern pickup contains around 1,800 major components, Slate engineers reduced that number to approximately 800.

Over 100 Ways to Personalize It
Every Slate Truck leaves the factory in the same gray finish.
Instead of offering multiple paint colors, the company encourages owners to personalize their vehicles using vinyl wraps.
More than 100 wrap designs will be available at launch, with complete wrap kits expected to cost under $500.
Owners can even install the wraps themselves, making customization far more affordable than traditional paint options.
Built for Real Work
Despite its compact size, the Slate Truck is designed to be a capable work vehicle.
It offers:
- 1,550 pounds (703 kg) of payload capacity
- 2,000 pounds (907 kg) of towing capacity
Power comes from a single 181-horsepower rear-mounted electric motor producing 195 lb-ft (264 Nm) of torque.
The truck reaches 60 mph in approximately 8 seconds and has a top speed of 90 mph (145 km/h).
While it isn’t designed to be a performance vehicle, these figures are more than adequate for daily work and commuting.
Tesla Supercharger Compatible
One of the truck’s biggest advantages is its North American Charging Standard (NACS) connector.
This gives owners access to the extensive Tesla Supercharger network.
Using DC fast charging, the battery can recharge from 20% to 80% in about 30 minutes.
An onboard 11-kW charger is also included for home charging.
A 10-Year Warranty
Slate is backing its first vehicle with an impressive warranty package.
Both the battery and electric powertrain are covered for 10 years or 110,000 miles (177,000 km), making it one of the strongest warranty programs in the affordable EV segment.
The company also plans to support owners through approximately 3,000 certified service centers across the United States.
Why Isn’t the Slate Truck Coming to Canada?
Despite strong interest north of the border, Slate has confirmed that the Truck will not be sold in Canada.
The company cites import tariffs and unfavorable exchange rates as the primary reasons.
Industry analysts estimate that once tariffs and currency conversion are factored in, the truck’s price could climb to $40,000-$45,000, eliminating its biggest competitive advantage – affordability.
More Than 10,000 Preorders Already
Customer interest has exceeded expectations.
Shortly after opening preorders, Slate announced that it had received more than 10,000 reservations.
However, buyers should note one important detail: the preorder now requires a non-refundable $300 deposit, a policy that has generated mixed reactions among potential customers.
Could Slate Become the Next Ford Maverick?
The Slate Truck enters a market with surprisingly little direct competition.
On one side is the Ford Maverick, offering gasoline and hybrid powertrains.
On the other are expensive electric pickups such as the Ford F-150 Lightning, Chevrolet Silverado EV, and Rivian R1T.
Slate takes an entirely different approach – offering a simple, affordable, repair-friendly electric pickup without unnecessary complexity.
